The inspiration for Maze and Cube came from the fascination with the complexity of the Rubik’s cube and the desire to make it more accessible to a wider audience. While professional players can quickly solve the Rubik’s cube, most people find it challenging and intimidating. By combining the Rubik’s cube with a 3D maze, Maze and Cube offers three different game modes, increasing its possibilities and playability.
One of the key features of Maze and Cube is its ability to change the maze structure when children rotate the cube. This creates a variety of possible states and challenges, keeping children engaged and motivated. The toy offers three ways to complete the game: rolling the ball in the cube to reach the terminal point, restoring the Rubik’s cube, or accomplishing both tasks simultaneously.
The Maze and Cube toy is made using injection molding technology, using materials such as ABS and acrylic. It has dimensions of 6.8cm × 6.8cm × 6.8cm, making it compact and portable for children to carry and play with.
Designed by Yang yang Tu, Maze and Cube was developed in collaboration with Xiangyu Bai and Xingyu Xu at Zhejiang University of Technology. The project started in March 2017 and was completed in July 2017.
Through extensive research, the design team identified the need to balance the increasing complexity of Rubik’s cubes with user-friendliness. Maze and Cube aims to satisfy users' curiosity while also providing a more accessible and engaging experience. By improving playability, increasing game modes, and reducing learning costs, Maze and Cube offers a unique and educational toy for children.
Maze and Cube has received recognition for its design excellence. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Toys, Games, and Hobby Products Design category in 2018. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.
